Lundu Sematan Festival Attracts Thousands of VisitorsVarious events were held to enliven the Lundu Sematan Festival held over two days from 16 July 2010. Among Expo exhibition and sale, flower crab fishing, gymnastics artistic, cultural night, the feast of the people, go-kart show, tug of war competition, Lundu Idol, water festivals and the like. The third festival has attracted about 10,000 visitors, especially people in the Lundu District, Kuching and Bau. The official opening party was done by the Chief Minister of Sarawak, YAB Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and other cabinet ministers as Special Counsel in the Office of the Chief Minister, YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Honourable Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg, Member of the Legislative Assembly (Assembly) Opar area, YB Ranum Mina and Santubong MP, YB Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Waterfront Sematan, Sarawak Chief Minister said that within the next two years, Sematan will be a new city and will become one of the tourist destinations in the state. According to him, plans are made to upgrade Semantan attract more tourists and as measures to improve the economic status of the community again. Clearly Taib, to carry the dream, requirements such as parking lots, shops, food and beverage, accommodation and so on should be taken to provide facilities for visitors. This is because the Hon said, at present, this small region still lack such facilities to provide comfort to the tourists. According to Taib, the beauty of nature in Sematan and Lundu, unique handicrafts and hospitality of the people in this region to be the potential to attract tourists from within and outside the state.He added that there are roads in Sematan and Lundu facilitate the visitors in and out of driving yourself to reach this area. In the meantime Taib said, visitors here can also intends to call at Opar which will also be developed into a city within the next five years. According to Pehin Sri, the arrival of the tourists come here not just to see skyscraper buildings such as those in the big cities but want to do something different to recharge. Around the country, Mahathir said, cultural diversity, local food and the beauty of the environment as well as friendliness of the local residents to be a major asset in attracting foreign tourists visit. He urged that local communities maintain the customs, culture and diversity of food available in this country because it is in other places.
